Jana Schulz

Tetris B Mountaingoat

An intimate series of photographs that capture the intricacies of male relationships.

Berlin-based artist Jana Schulz initiates encounters on film and in photographs with men previously unknown to her, in which intimacy emerges in the process of shooting: performative, shared, situational. She observes structures and dynamics within social groups, enriching her documentary approach by integrating fictional elements.

With her works, she explores the inner world of male relationships; in that spirit, her most recent photographic series raises questions about masculinity on the threshold of adult life. At its center stands a portrait of the South African Bathenkosi Sphesihle Luphalule, his play with common role models, and the search for his true self. Tetris B Mountaingoat prompts reflections on identity beyond conventional categories. The book includes text by Logan February.

Reviews

“A book that serves as a photographic portrait of Bathenkosi Sphesihle Luphalule, a Black young man living in South Africa. The photos document his evidently playful engagement with masculine identity. They portray a form of masculinity beyond traditional attributions. . . and they promise not to disappoint.”
