Timothy Mennel

Executive Editor

The Press has particular strengths in political, urban, and intellectual history, as well as the histories of capitalism, sexuality, and other subjects. These are embodied recently by Andrew Hartman’s Karl Marx in America; Charisse Burden-Stelly’s Black Scare / Red Scare; Gayle F. Wald’s book on Ella Jenkins, This Is Rhythm; and Andrew W. Kahrl’s The Black Tax.

I have a special interest in ambitious trade books, such as Kevin M. Schultz’s Why Everyone Hates White Liberals (Including White Liberals)Gretchen Heefner’s Sand, Snow, and Stardust; and John M. Kinder’s World War Zoos. Recent regional standouts include Michael Soffer’s Our Nazi; Paul Fehribach’s Midwestern Food; and Ryan Chester’s Chicago Reflected.

I joined the Press in 2013, having worked at Random House Adult Trade, Artforum/Bookforum, Princeton University Press, and the American Planning Association. I have consulted at the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and elsewhere. I hold a BA from Carleton College and a PhD in geography from the University of Minnesota.

I am fortunate to have the help of editorial associate Andrea Blatz.

Prospective authors are encouraged to consult our submission guidelines. We also provide an overview about publishing with Chicago here.
